Still Life with Potential Long Island Ice Tea

It’s another print in my Still Life series, along with the Hot Toddy, the Manhattan, and the Sidecar! The previous incarnations have been very classy drinks, but I decided to get a little trashy for this one.

Turns out drawing six bottles is a lot tougher than two or three. I spent a lot of time last week getting all those shadows and reflections in place!

I’ll add a print of this to the store when I get a chance.

Standard Wormwood Distillery (pandemic edition)

Standard Wormwood Distillery Tasting Room and Bar. 68 34th St. between Second and Third avenues, enter from Industry City Courtyard 5/6. (718) 635–4368, www.standardwormwood.com

Open Tue-Thu, 4-8 pm; Fri-Sat, 1-10 pm; Sun, 1-8 pm.

This comic is the first of… three? (probably three) comics covering the bars of Industry City Courtyard 5/6, which is a pretty great place to drink. It’s private land, so you can drink outside without a problem.

Finally, Standard Wormwood opened back in February – it was one of the last stories I wrote for Brooklyn Paper. Check out that fine work of journalism here:

Coney Island (pandemic edition)

Freak Bar and Coney Island USA.1208 Surf Ave. at  W. 12th Street in Coney Island, www.coneyisland.com). Closed for now, but its Film Festival is happening online until Oct. 2.

Margarita Island.   1105 Bowery St. at W. 12th St. in Coney Island. www.margaritaislandci.com.  Open daily, 11 am-11 pm. (Apparently it picks up later in the night.)

Coney Island Brewery (last reviewed here, when it was much smaller. Some day I’ll get to cover its hugely increased interior).  1904 Surf Ave. at W. 17th Street in Coney Island, (718) 996–0019, www.coneyislandbeer.com. Open Fri, Sat, and Sun, noon–6 pm.

Black is Beautiful beer comes from a recipe created by black-owned Texas brewery Weathered Souls, who released it for free on the condition that proceeds go to charity.

I also visited Ruby’s on the Boardwalk, but all of its 10 tables were full for the 20 minutes that I stuck around.

N. 11th St. Cookout (pandemic edition)

N. 11 St. Cookout.  86 N. 11th St. at Wythe Avenue in Willliamsburg, (917) 410-0882, www.n11stcookout.com. Open weekdays 4-11 pm; Sat-Sun, noon-11 pm.

This new pop-up beer garden, across the street from the Brooklyn Brewery, is simple but fun. Each table has a QR code, and you order on your phone. Waiters have masks and gloves, and the tables are far enough apart that it feels fine to relax and take of your mask.

Beers were $8 for drafts, and there were some highballs (Moscow Mule, Aperol Spritz) and frozen drinks for $12-$14. Food was good, but nothing special. It was just relaxed, you know?
